The home brewing process begins at the local home brew shop or online retailer selecting and purchasing the ingredients for the chosen recipe. For this tutorial we chose to brew a malt extract recipe using specialty grains to add character.
We have chosen some light dry malt extract, corn sugar, crystal malt for color and body, chocolate malt for color and complexity, hops, and dry active brewers ale yeast. We had the specialty malts (crystal malt, chocolate malt) crushed at the home brew store. If you prefer crushing the grains yourself, the grain can be crushed using a flat stable surface and a rolling pin. Spread a small amount of grain on the surface, and crack the grain (do not pulverize) into several pieces with the rolling pin.
