Notes

I have made 12 batches of this unbelievably great batch ... it is a keeper. This is my own best recipe EVER. Mash @ 122F for 20 minutes, and then at 154-156F for 60 minutes, raise the temp by adding 1 1/2-2 gallons boiling water. Sparge normally & Boil for 60 minutes add the brown sugar at start of boil. Ferment as you would for a good ale. I have developed this awesome House Best Bitters. Update: 6-10-2005, I have made this three times, it is a WINNER ! ! ! update update 1-31-2011 made this 12 times ... WOW ! ! ! WOW !!! WOW !!!

Azorean Brewer

Awesome, and Malty

2005-04-14 5:22am

Well it's been two months since I brewer this and promised to give some feed back on this batch, WOW, it turned out really great, it is true to a "Best Bitters" not overly hopped @ 100% of target. It has a malt characteristic of a neighborhood pub in England, If you read this and pass on making this recipe you are really missing out on an outstanding brew ... Add .25 Lbs. Special "B" to try and get is a little malier, and added a little more hops

Totally awesome

I have made a lot of beer, and this is by far the best recipe I have ever made. You must give it a go.

Based on what you wrote I had to give this one a try. My only modification was that I replaced the Fuggles with my HG Williamette. My OG was 48. This is the first batch where I will be controling the fermentation temp with a freezer and a temp control unit. Will post again after this one gets bottled. 17 Sep 05 It came out great. I wasn't quite use to drinking a bitter as I usually brew pale ales but this one grows on you. After the first you are looking forward for the second. I will list it as a Brew Again. I will cut the priming down a bit, my FG was 11 and I primed with 3/4 cup which was too much (Great head though).

This is the best "Best Bitters" I have ever had ...

Talk about Malt complexity, and don't forget those adjuncts, they are important in a great English ale like this one ... 4'th time making this, this is officially my "House Ale". Do not deviate from the recipe.

Best brew I make, BATCH # 6

2007-05-28 10:05am

I brewed this today (Memorial Day 5-28-2007) again for the 6'th time ... it is by far the simplist and best beer I make. Everyone to samples it says I should enter it in competion. O.G. was 1.052 YOU SHOULD TRY THIS IT IS AN AWESOME BITTERS ! ! !

mattharms

just brewed, what is your addition?

2007-07-11 9:44pm

I just brewed this today, thank you! I have a question. In one of your comments you mentioned 0.25 pounds of special B. What is this? Also, do you know how many cups of brown sugar 0.25 pounds ends up being?

Azorean Brewer

Don't mess with this recipe

2007-08-15 9:27pm

Ok, to answer your question Special B is often refered to as Belgian Special B ... but I have refined this recipe to produce an awesome batch of beer. Do not deviate from it ... this is amazingly simple and really great brew ... let me know how it turned out OK? really curious, everybody that tastes this can't believe it is home made ... This is the best home brew you will taste .. my own House recipe ... I have made this exact recipe more than 8 times ... by the way I would guess that 4 oz. of brown sugar would be somewhere around 1 cup ... not packed just spinkled in, but invest in a good mail scale to save your self the trouble of guessing ... they are around $30 Paco ...

mattharms

as good as advertised

I have made this beer twice and each time it has been as good as all the comments say. I keep forgetting to buy the special bitters but other than that I have followed the recipe. You will not be dissapointed.

Saturday Boys Brew Session

2008-04-13 3:00pm

Had a brew / lesson session ... some friends wanted to learn how to brew all grain, it was great, they did all the work and I sat back and instructed them on what to do, only way to learn is to get right in to it, from crushing the grain to running the wort chiller. We did a double (10 Gallon) batch. I have brewed this recipe many times, this is my favortie batch, OG was 1.050.

Wow, unreal, make this easy brew you will NOT be sorry. Here in South Africa we are usually larger drinkers, my buddies demolished this in one sitting!! Used SAFALE S 04 instead, perfect.
