Calibration query

Post by mmmooretx »

This is a question on how to do a calibration run on the MLT when the heat source is a heat exchange coil in the HLT. Assuming that the water volume in the HLT vessel is stable, and has electric heat (5500watt hot water heater coil) and the volume of water in the MLT is say 10-15 gallons in a 20 MLT gallon (same for HLT) and the recirculation pump is always on what other items do I need to know to enter the correct calibration numbers into the BTP program?
Thank you for your time and support.

I think it is probably best to think of the entire HLT assembly as a heat source. Ultimately, you want to know how fast you can heat your MLT whether it is direct fired or recirculated. To calibrate the HLT as a heat source, it should be setup for a typical brewing session. The volume of water in the HLT is critical since the exchanger is most efficient when all the coils are immersed. The MLT should contain a volume of water that approximately matches expected mash volume.

Running the calibration test is pretty straight forward. Start at a temperature in the saccharification range and note the time it takes to heat the MLT 10°C (18°F). This should get the heating time predictions reasonably close when setting up schedules. If you run into any problems please let us know.
