Bitterness calculation

Postby russguill » Sat Sep 06, 2008 10:45 am

Maybe I'm remembering things wrong, but isn't the bitterness of your beer affected by the amount of malt in my grist? So if I were to go from having 10 lbs of pale malt to 15 lbs, shouldn't I see my bitterness go down?

Yes, the bitterness will go down with a higher gravity.

That's what I was thinking. I had to choose a different Utilization setting in BTP to make that happen when I was formulating a recipe.

In researching this, I found that there are different utilization calculations. Some take gravity into consideration; others don't.

algorithms

Yeah, the algorithms can be a little difficult to choose since most of us don't know the actual IBU's of our beer. I choose to use the Tinseth algorithm and include the gravity correction for full volume boils, and that seems to get me close.

stick with one after a few brews you'll know what to expect. I use tinseth for full wort boils.
