mead, infection ?

Post by brewhaha »

well its be awhile (about a month )since I post'd a note about my mead and some strange white stuff at the top, at first I described it as a film, now it seems to be streaming down the sides, almost looks like a fine powder, any of you meaders, (or anyone with more knowledge than me:) have any idea ?

The "dusty" stuff you are describing is yeast that has been attracted to the glass and is flocculating down the sides. This is a common thing in bottle conditioned homebrews as well. It looks weird, but is not a problem unless the yeast got there by getting hung up on dirt or scratches in the glass. You may want to closely inspect the vessel when you empty it out. If it is scratched, get a new one because it will become increasingly hard to sanitize.
