Hop cones V pellets in a brew
Anyone out there in homebrew world got a foolproof method of changing weight of hop cones to weight of hop pellets in a brewing calculation, as the weight of pellets if used at the same level as cones seems to be far to bitter, does something happen to the hops as they are processed into pellets?, I prefer to use cones, but several types are not available here, (N.Z.), imported pellets are, but getting a satisfactory result is elusive, thanks, and good brewing to you, Nigel.
Hop Utilization
Hi, Brakspears, I believe pellet hops get about 10% greater extraction than whole hops. So as a starting point, use 90% of the cone weight to figure out the pellet weight to use. But to get a better idea, use the recipe generator tools on this site. You can select which form of hops. Start with whole, make note of the IBUs, and then change the hops to pellet and adjust the weight until you get the same IBUs (or pretty close). Pellet hops during manufacture are compressed which ruptures the sacs contained the alpha acid. As a result the acids are readily available for isomerization in the boil as opposed to whole/plug hops.

Sunrise hop pellets
Sunrise hops reccomend using 1/3 less than cones if using their pellets, ive always found this to be pretty accurate between comparison of brews.
