Fermentation Woes

What went wrong? Was this supposed to happen? Should I throw it out? What do I do now?

Fermentation Woes

Post by tomcollins4u »

A newbie here. I brewed my first batch yesterday. I figured my airlock should be doing something since it's been 24hrs. now. I peeked in and there is just a thin brownish coat on top. Should I pitch more yeast? I did everything to the best of my ability as far as sanitizing and such. The temp on the fermenter is 72F. Please help it's driving me nuts....

If you're using a pail for a fermenter, sometimes the lids don't get a tight seal and CO2 escapes through there instead of the airlock. It sounds like you have the onset of fermentation with the thin brown coat on the surface you mentioned. Don't worry.

Went out with some friends last nite and when we got back the airlock was just a going... I guess just the newbie jitters.
