poor mash efficiency

What went wrong? Was this supposed to happen? Should I throw it out? What do I do now?

poor mash efficiency

Post by bredmakr »

Last Saturday I brewed an American Ale partial mash style. I mashed 4 lbs of grains at 150-155

How much wort did you collect?

Post by jeff »

When you drained the wort from the grains, what was the volume of the run-off? This measurement will greatly affect the results of the Analysis. Also, did you mash the grains in 4 gallons of water? 4 pounds of grain should only require about 1 gallon of water for a single step infusion. Also, is the cooler fitted with a false bottom or drainage manifold? This device collects run-off evenly from the entire filter bed.

run-off volume

Post by bredmakr »

I collected 3.5 gallons of run-off. I did mash the grains in 4 gallons of water. The cooler is not yet fitted with a false bottom or drainage manifold. I used a large grain bag to filter.

Here are a few things that I would do if it were my batch:
4 pounds of grain should be infused with 1.25 gallons of water 13

My 2 cents worth

I noticed in the original post he stated that he drained the wort with the valve wide open. It's been my experience that you must drain the wort very slowly to prevent channeling through the grainbed, perhaps this could explain some of the problem.....In MHO:)
