Searching for a Kronenbourg Clone

Post by krussader »

Hey everyone,
Well I am trying to decide which recipe to do next since I am away from home most of this summer and want to stick a couple batches in the cellar to age for the three months that I am gone.
One of the possibilities was to try to clone Kronenbourg.
Now if you are thinking "Ew 1664" I agree, its horrible stuff. I think what is known as "Red" to be much supperior. It is only called Red because of the label, its not an amber beer. The problem is that it is not sold in North America.
So I was wondering if anyone here had a recipe for a clone or any pointers where to start. I have E-mailed Brassaries-Kronenbourg and an Aussie Homebrew (they claim to have a clone recipe kit for sale but don't ship outside of Austrailia) without any luck.

So if it helps, Kronenbourg "Red" (stolen from the website):
Pilsner, 4.2% ABV.
Head: Dense, persistent head, Fine bubbles, White
Colour: Bright golden-yellow
Nose: Medium to low intensity, Dominant malty-cereal nose, Hops, ripe fruit, citrus fruit and yeast, with hints of honey and pepper.
Aroma:Medium intensity, Dominant malt-cereal flavours, Fruity (citrus fruit, apple, quince)), Hints of liquorice, hops and pepper
Palate: Well balanced, with slight tanginess
Body: Good, smooth body, slight sparkle
Finish: Short finish, Smooth, well-defined bitterness with hints of malt, Lightly tannic.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi There,

I just finished viewing their website and cannot find any beer that has 4.2% ABV or that match your description here.

What's there is Grande Cru (6% abv); 1664 (5% abv) and Blanc White Beer (5%).

Sorry...not sure what you're looking for.

Which site?

Well thats the British site, the beer I was talking about is the first on the list. Unfortunatly there is not a whole lot of information on the beer, but I am thinking that it is brewed with Pils grain with a combination of Saaz and Cascade hops, the only reason being of the description given and since it was first commercially made in 1947. I am not sure about this, but I am asuming that European hops were pretty much non existant after WW2, just from the damages over the war. It would make sence to import North American Hops, especially with the Marshall Plan. Just an idea.

Say,

Maybe if you did a search for brew clubs in europe, someone could maybe point you the way to a decent recipe?

I was unable to find anything of what you're looking for. Would you have an official name for the beer? That would probably help a lot.

Good luck on your quest!
