Push, I know exactly where your coming from. I built a CPBF for about 12 bucks and tried it out a few weeks ago. The first trick is to have the beer cold and the bottles colder, a lot less foam. Flaked Maze

For what it's worth, I make a CAP that I really like and the recipe calls for 25% flaked maze. It seems to me that it adds a little tartness to the beer which of course may not be to everyones liking.

Gav, I think the obvious solution here is to send wee Jimmy and the wife out in the backyard with a spade and a hoe, dig it up and plant your own barley.You should get 60 bu/acre, that equates to about 1800 lbs and it won't cost you but about $25 for the seed.Just kidding of course,Gav I've been try...

Katybug: Check your local homebrew supply store or if nothing close check the web. I was given a started kit a year and a half ago, she created a monster. You can no doubt find a decent starter for about 70$ which should include all items needed, fementer, bottling bucket, carboy,ingredients for a 5...

That is exactly what I do to lager and it works like a charm. I use it in the warmer months also, the only difference is I must change the frozen water bottles every other day. I bought my cooler from Sears when they put summer items on sale....I paid $4 for mine, sure as hell beats buyin a fridge:)
